Moving from a traditional litter box to a self-cleaning litter box, most cats need a 7–14 day adjustment period. This is a proven transition process that keeps stress to a minimum.
1. Don't remove the old box right away
Place the new unit next to the old one (unplugged), letting your cat get familiar with its presence and smell for at least 3–5 days. This step is the key to the adjustment period; skipping it and using the machine directly is the root cause of most stress reactions.
2. Sprinkle used litter from the old box into the new machine
Cats recognize the toilet by smell. Scoop a small handful of "used, urine-scented" litter from the old box into the new unit — this trick works almost immediately.
3. Keep the old box available
For the first 1–2 weeks, keep the old box too. Clean the new machine manually at first, letting your cat choose. Only remove the old box after it has actively, steadily used the new one for 5–7 days.
4. App and cleaning schedule
Most smart litter boxes let you control cleaning frequency in the app. For a new machine, set the interval longer (cleaning right after every use actually makes cats nervous); once it's fully accustomed, adjust as needed.
5. Possible problems and fixes
- Cat pees next to the machine: Not fully adjusted yet. Go back to steps 1–2 and extend the period.
- Afraid to enter: The running sound scared it. Lower the cleaning frequency and let it observe the machine running nearby for 1–2 days.
- Picky about where it poops: Too much or too little litter in the unit — keep to the manufacturer's recommended fill line.
6. Choosing litter
Tofu litter and bentonite both work, but avoid crystal litter (small granules jam the machine easily). During the break-in period, use the same litter as the old box to reduce variables.
